Description of Activity:

Comm. support for 170 mile running relay race in Park County. In an area that lacked any other type of communications. we had 4 mobile and 2 fix stations.The fixed stations were our telephone contact with 911 if needed and contacts with race HQ.

Duration in hours:

10

Serving Amateur Radio Group(s):

ARES District 6

Served Agency(ies):

Describe Served Agency Participation

Outword bound is a world renown that organizes and conducts out door activitys for children and adults, along with having camps on building self confidants amoung young people.

Number of amateurs participating:

7

Optional - List of amateurs participating

None provided

Man hours for the event (checkins*duration)

56

List the goals of the activity:

To be available in the case of an emergency. To convay messages from exchanges and to race HQ.

Were those goals met: (Y/N)

Y

Explain:

We would have be able to call 911 if needed.We were able to pass traffic to race HQ as they were able to pass traffic to us at the exchanges

What went well?:

911 was not needed. There were some problems show up, like the teams vans leaving runners behind. 2 lost runners. Our communications helped to correct the problems. All went fairly well and an NCS was not needed, till the repeater went down. Then 1 mobile took over as NCS and relay on simplex.

Areas needing improvement:

I gave out phone numbers of the race HQ to the mobiles, that lead to a discussion about phone numbers. That should have been given to the fix station only. Less repeating of same word. More infomation was given out than was needed, but this was a relaxed activity.

Lessons Learned:

Have a back up simplex Freq. just in case the only repeater in the area goes down.

Additional Training needed:

Always

Ideas for future exercises:

None

Comments:

This was a good exercise. It is ashame it was on a friday, more of D6 members could have been involved.
