DRT Training

DRT Training Requirements

There are four categories of DRT responders (Class A, B, C & T), based on training, equipment and experience. Class “T” (trainees) have one year from receipt of application to meet the training and equipment requirements before being granted Class A, B or C responder status (see Equipment requirements in the right margin).

  1. Complete one or both of the following emergency communication courses (required):

  2. ICS training
    1. IS-100

IS-100, Introduction to the Incident Command System, introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).

    2. IS-200

IS-200 is designed to enable personnel to operate efficiently during an incident or event within the Incident Command System (ICS). ICS-200 provides training on and resources for personnel who are likely to assume a supervisory position within the ICS.

      IS-100 is a pre-requisite to the IS-200 course.

    3. IS-700   NIMS (National Incident Management System) Overview.

On February 28, 2003, President Bush issued Homeland Security Presidential Directive-5. HSPD-5 directed the Secretary of Homeland Security to develop and administer a National Incident Management System (NIMS). NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private-sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents. You can also find information about NIMS at http://www.fema.gov/emergency/nims/index.shtm

This course introduces NIMS and takes approximately three hours to complete. It explains the purpose, principles, key components and benefits of NIMS. The course also contains "Planning Activity" screens giving you an opportunity to complete some planning tasks during this course. The planning activity screens are printable so that you can use them after you complete the course.

  3. Digital communications training:
While not a requirement for entry-level DRT Category C responders, applicants should know that there is a very strong digital communication emphasis for DRT. We expect as much as 70% of DRT emergency communications may utilize V/UHF packet and HF Pactor. DRT applicants are encouraged to acquire strong digital communication skills and capabilities.
